Brief History

  • 492 years of persistent struggle, followed by 37 years of unwavering public awareness.
  • On November 9, 1989, Kameshwar Chaupal of Bihar played a pivotal role in the historic foundation stone-laying ceremony by placing the inaugural stone.
In 2003, to confirm the existence of any Hindu structure at the debated site before 1528 CE, the Allahabad High Court directed to conduct a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey, employing radar waves for photography.
This survey revealed the remnants of a structure extending far beneath the ground. To confirm the findings of the GPR survey, the High Court commissioned an excavation by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The ASI report confirmed the existence of a North Indian-style temple beneath the ground.
In September 2010, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court upheld the demolition of the temple while resolving all civil suits together.
However, a resolution was reached to divide the contested area into three separate sections. None of the parties involved accepted this verdict, resulting in all parties filing appeals at the Supreme Court.
In March 2019, a proposal for resolution through mediation was put forward in the Supreme Court, establishing a mediation committee including three members.
    A. Justice Kalifulla, Chennai (Retired from Supreme Court)
    B. Sriram Panchu, Chennai (Senior Advocate of Madras High Court)
    C. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Art of Living
The mediation process commenced in March and by the end of July, it was widely acknowledged that mediation was not feasible.
  • The Supreme Court ordered regular hearing of all appeals from August 6.
A full bench of five judges was formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice. All parties’ views were heard regularly for 40 days and 170 hours. The hearing was completed on 16 October 2019.
  • On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court’s full bench unanimously ruled that the Indian government’s acquisition of the disputed 14,000 acres of land and its surroundings in 1993 was determined to be the rightful property of Lord Ram.” In addition, the government was instructed to create a separate trust that would oversee the construction of the temple on the full 70-acre plot of land.
  • February 5, 2020 – Formation of the trust under the name ‘Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra’.
  • August 5, 2020 – Revered saints across the country, Pujya Sarsanghchalak RSS, Dr Mohan Bhagwat, and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the temple’s construction by performing the Bhoomi Pujan.
Sacred waters and soil from the country’s holy rivers and pilgrimage sites were dedicated to the Bhumi Puja ceremony.
